I love tradition. Thanks for the yummy and healthy soup recipe, Dr. ED, along with the history behind it. You shared very fascinating Italian customs for letting go of the past and ringing in the New Year. Have my own rituals and was never introduced to the red underwear; perhaps it's time.
Let's step into 2025 with courage, kindness, and joy.
We always had lentils as kids in the late 40's and 50's. I remember emtying a box of lentils on a newspaper and going through each one taking out small impurities. My younger brother in now looking for anyone who sells stuffed lentils and gets a funny look when he asks if they know where they sell them. Happy New year Ed.
Ed, I do remember when I was about 10 visiting my aunts, uncles and cousins they would parade around the tenement banging pots and pans. I never had the lentils. Ed, Happy New Year to you and Diane.
Love this! Lentils were not a tradition in my family but I adopted it years later. However, it was short lived because nobody liked them! So much for tradition! Happy and Healthy New Year to you and Diane. I am happy to have 2024 behind me. Tough year but hopeful for 2025. ❤️
Great article! Love lentil soup, but don't think I did as a child! Recall Mom made lentils and pasta occasionally. Yes, Italians did feel a good purge was necessary once in a while, LOL!
Wonderful story of the often overlooked period between Christmas and New Years. As for your obsession with lentils, I recall when I was in graduate school, my favorite restaurant served Indian foods. It was a house filled by college students from India who lived on the upper two floors of the house and operated a small Indian restaurant on the first floor. There was a banner strung across the entrance hall that said "A House without Lentils is not a Home." Thanks for reminding me of the importance of lentils. And yes, lentils are a welcome addition to any meal.
My mother in law made lentils. I hated them but, out of respect I would have a small (very small) dish. My mother would make pasta with ceci beans on New Year’s Eve. That I really enjoyed. Again, for luck.
Thank you for another nice article. I will make the lentil soup (I've always liked lentils) and I will definitely wear the red briefs that I've had for years (but never had occasion to wear) on New Years Day! Happy New Year!
Love my lentils!!! Thanks for your recipe-mine is a little different-I’ll have to give yours a try!!!!
Happy New Year to you and yours!
Thanks, Virginia. It is a German recipe. We just had it. Delicious. Happy New Year

Thanks, Lora. I will have a piece on Longjohns soon. Not red, however. Happy New Year. I am positive about the New Year
Yup, exactly what I’m cooking now, sans cumin, turmeric, cinnamon and coconut milk 🤣. Made just the way grandma made with some pork flavor.
Health and Happiness to you in 2025!
Yes, Josie. What I posted was an old German recipe. Thus those additions. Follow your recipe and have a Happy Bountiful New Year

They got it right. But my mantra, notwithstanding the lentils, was "A house without meatballs, etc., etc."
A very happy, healthy and blessed 2025 to you and all your family! I don't ever remember having lentils, but I love your story!!!!!!
It's time for lentils, Natalie
Happy Healthy New Year

Send a picture of you making lentils soup in your red briefs
Ah the purge. If it was only once in a while then OK, I guess.🤔😅
Eat your lentils
