Informative and entertaining. I did a little research after reading your story and discovered that "union suits" were initially designed for women by reformers in the 1860's who hated the painful means of existing undergarments to constrain a woman's natural shape. The expansion into menswear also was liberating for men who only needed one garment to cover the entire body. The union suit is not only more practical, but aids in finding one's feminine side. Wear them proudly.

Thanks, Larry. I received a note from a woman who wondered about women and long underwear. This is perfect. Thanks for doing your homework.

Good article. My dad always wore them I’m cold weather months. He was a carpenter and worked outside in winter. Kept him healthy by wearing Long Johns and eating right. Be well!

A good move by a good man, Eh?

Hey Ed, ahhh, Long johns. Yes , I wore them as a kid in Texas but not after grade school days. They were great for our cold winters in Dallas where we often got temps in the '30's with ice storms in the winter. In retrospect I believe they still make sense. I just got out of favor for them. However, I Wish I had a pair on right now. JC Yuill

Ed, yes, long Johns, thermal underwear is like a home that is well insulated keeping the warmth in your body. I confess it's been seventy years since I have worn them. The years serving in US Army they served me well.

Ed Iannuccilli's avatar

It's cold. Time to don them, Peter
