Cool reflection! It is interesting that for awhile after the equinox the sun still rises about the same time. The days get longer because the sun starts to set later.
Ed, It's amazing to me that so many others like ourselves, think about the winter solstice in the same way. Finally; an awakening hope of a new year and new life. I too feed my birds and wonder about them and how they survive in this bitter cold, but they do, and flock to the feeder in a frenzy of activity, as if waiting for warmer weather the same as us.
I enjoyed the photos of your dad and mom. I have photos of both of mine when they were in their 20s or so. The photos are the very same as yours .We were blessed to have such people as parents who loved us, taught us right from wrong, to be respectful and kind to others and to be responsible and accountable for our actions. They too looked at the winter solstice much as you Dad did; with hope for things yet to come. A happy, healthy and hopeful new year to you and yours. JC and Bev
Re the photos. I found them everywhere and from many relatives. Shoe boxes, back of drawers, cellar... you name it. I have scanned most into my computer and now have a great stash to access.
Ed, nice photo of dad and sharp as a tack also lovely photo of mom and dad on vacation. Yes, winter brings the doldrums but as the minutes tick away each day comes the rising sun. Octopus, now that's a little stretch for me. Ed, on vacation in our room was a placard. " If you don't like winter take a 90-day loan January 1st"
Handsome 20 year old Dad I just live one day at a time, rise with the sun and rest when it's dark.
Certainly
Your dad, my dad, so similar. Thanks for the memories, Ed. I look forward to your thoughts every week.
Thanks, Ed. Lucky to us

Ed. I love the fact that you and your dad were able to share those moments watching your son play baseball. Precious moments to share.
Thanks, Mike. Froze our butts off on many a day.

Yes, Peter. Ever proud, he always dressed well, even when going for gas. I like the 90-day note quip. Not a bad idea.
His name was Peter.
Yes, Peter, love that name.
Pietro
"As the days get longer, the winter gets stronger." I like your Father's snazzy white pants!
Thanks, Charles. I am ever amazed by how he looked. He was a working man with no degrees and his pride in dress was evident; Gatsby-Like
Just a well -written story in a long unbroken line of
Thank you, Ned. Happy Healthy New Year
