About once a yr, I see a patient for advice on hiccups. These patients expect that I, a gastroenterologist, will crack the code with the wave of a hand. I confess that my track record on identifying the cause or prescribing a cure is rather lackluster. Fortunately, as in your case, spontaneous remission is the usual outcome.

I think I used Thorazine once for an intractable case. But save for breath holding, nothing worked. Thanks for weighing in, Mike.

I recall something from years ago about the longest bout of hiccups ever recorded. I think it was from Ripley's Believe it or Not, which I used to read in the newspaper comics pages. Anyway, I just Googled it and found that a Charles Osborne, Iowa farmer, supposedly had hiccups continuously for 68 years. I can't vouch for the veracity, but it sounds quite possible.

Great trivia. And likely a Ripley's Report.

Thanks, Mike.

ED, you are true professional helping people in need with medical needs long after retirement.

Ed, it's been a long time that I have heard a hiccup but have in the past given a loud shout to change the rhythm. Now all I need is a horse and wagon traveling town to town.

HaHa, Peter, very funny. There are still some horse and wagons around if you're interested.

Hi Ed! I once had a patient with intractable hiccups that lead to the discovery of a lymphoma. His symptoms disappeared after 2 cycles of treatment 3 weeks apart.

Wow. Interesting, Jim. Thanks

Ed, I remember back in the day, for really severe cases, we would prescribe chlorpromazine, Thorazine! A potent med, but it usually worked.

Ed Iannuccilli's avatar

Yes, I remember one intractable case where we used it.

Thank you, Lora. I still love it. It's the thing I miss most since retiring... taking care of people.

I used to get the "hics" at times, and they are annoying. One of my friends suggested a remedy, and I hope I can describe it so others can try it. As crazy as this sounds, I swear it worked for me several times. Here goes...Get a full drinking glass of water. Bend over with your head between your knees. Take the glass and place the rim against your uppeer lip and carefully drink the water while in this upside down position. Usually consuming one glass would do the trick. Really!

HaHa, this one is great, Dave. Not only have I heard it, but I've tried it and nearly drowned.

Make that two horse and wagons.
