Ed,

This advice is brilliant in its simplicity. Bob Hoffman, of York Barbell Company said something similar in the 1940s: eat nutritious food, get sufficient sleep, exercise regularly with weights, and maintain a tranquil mind.

Yes, Ned, control what you can control. There aren't many things we can control. Follow simple advice. It ain't that difficult.

Thanks for your comments.

Nice essay. Just kept building to a great finish. By the way, I think I had that same PE/Health teacher, but mine was in Detroit.

At 82 my body is a little stiffer and slower, its my mind I am working hard at. Watching my friends slide into dementia is very frightening.

Move more slowly as you exercise, Mary Jane.

And exercise your mind . . . books, museums, plays, music . . . friends luncheons

Is it customary that the gym teacher teaches health classes? My health teacher was the football coach who was a bit more "salty," especially when the topic of the week was STD. He put the fear of God in us when he recounted his days as an MP in the army and the aftermath when transporting soldiers to the infirmary. By the way, the health classes were separated by gender at my school in Denver. You had a much more enlightened instructor who taught you and the class the benefits of listening to your body and your mind to stay in peak physical and mental health. Not sure how you would have wound up if you had my health teacher?

Ah, but we also had a girls' teacher, a separate girls' gym, and separate cafeterias. God forbid boys might be seen eating with girls.

But it's true, Larry, I admired and listened to the gym teacher. And he knew how to pronounce my name! And he wasn't Italian! So I listened to him.
