Ed, always nice to see December 21ST. As we await the longer days of light and spring into summer, those minutes that add up to longer days on one hand are delightful and on the other a minute or two that we have lost. So let the young enjoy and we older folks appreciate realizing it's taking time off the meter.
Oh, those baseball games, wrapped in the "car" afghan, crocheted by my mother, the 1970's saw many a supper eaten on the way to the field courtesy of McDonalds. I thought I was done, then in 2000 a grandson appeared, baseball reared its head again. At this age I would love to relive those nights again.
Yes, they were wonderful and still are for us as we continue to follow our grandchildren all over the place. Merry Christmas and Happy Healthy New Year.
Great point of view to share Ed! I always look closely at my orchids for inspiration because this year 4 out of 6 just began shooting out some nice hard brown stems that will eventually make some beautiful flowers that will last for months!
Wonderful post. I love lighting candles on December 21st to show honor and gratitude for the blessings and lessons of the past year, and to embrace new beginnings. The thoughts of brighter days help sustain hope and strength for the coming year.
Beautifully stated, Larry. As did my father and those of his era, I have hope. The days are getting longer. So too is my trust in the integrity and honesty of our citizens.
As you noted, "Our abilities to make life better for ourselves, family, friends, and strangers we might never meet again is the beginning of a life well lived."
What a wonderful commentary on the change of seasons. I, too, agree that the Winter Solstice is a moment to reflect on the past year and years. When things look the darkest, there is always the possibility to infuse sober reflection, optimism, and rebirth, The power of nature can impact the power we [innately] feel...as part of nature's rhythm. Life is a unique journey to discover our strengths, weaknesses, and our capacity to change for the better as we grow to find merit for our existence. Our abilities to make life better for ourselves, family, friends, and strangers we might never meet again is the beginning of a live well lived.

Reminds me of the old New England saying, "As the light gets longer, the winter gets stronger."
